How can I insulate my pipes for the winter?
It’s time to start preparing for winter. If you’ve recently moved into a new home in London, it might be a good idea to check out your water pipes. If they’re not already lagged, or the lagging is in poor condition, you need to address it. This could save you having to call in a 24-hour plumber in London.
Insulating your pipes make good sense. If you insulate both your cold water and your hot water pipes, this provides a double benefit. Not only will it prevent burst pipes in winter, but it could also reduce your water heating bills too. You’ll be surprised how much heat radiates away; especially if the pipe is in a cold environment.
If you do need to call a 24-hour plumber in London, you would do well to call us here at CW Services Plumbing and Heating. Our contact numbers are shown at the end of this article.
DIY lagging
Lagging your water pipes is a reasonably simple thing to do. You don’t need to be a DIY expert. All you need is some pipe lagging (available from stores like Screwfix), a tape measure and a Stanley knife.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. So, rather than going through the lagging process word by word, we will give you an abbreviated instruction. In addition, we will point you at a video you can view at the Affinity Water website.
Basic fitting instructions
Measure the length(s) you need prior to purchase
Cut to length where necessary
Using your Stanley knife cut through one wall of the lagging following the pre-cut line
Open the lagging and fold around the pipe
Clip around the pipe using clips provided
Tape any joints
Kits are available for outside taps
If you follow the instructions above and also check out the video we refer to, you will find the process nice and easy.
Which pipes ought to be lagged?
Not all water pipes need lagging. Cold water pipes which are inside your home in an environment which is always warm are okay without. It’s only hot water pipes that will benefit from heat retention or pipes that are in cold areas such as lofts or in the outside and that are exposed to cold weather that you need to attend to.
