Tips to reduce your water usage and your water bill

If you follow our tips to reduce your water usage and your water bill, you can kill two birds with one stone. Not only can you reduce your outgoings, but you can also become an environmentally responsible consumer.

You can’t switch water providers

With gas and electricity it’s easy enough to switch to a new supplier and cut costs that way; but it’s not something you can do with your water. Basically you are stuck with your existing provider, but there are other ways, and following our tips to reduce water usage and your water bill, will get you the same end result – smaller bills.

Switching to a metered supply

You may not be able to switch supplier but you can switch from a non-metered supply to a metered supply. If you are on a non-metered supply, your water rate bills will be set by the rateable value of your property. Having a water meter fitted means that you will pay only for the water you use. So in that way it puts you in the driving seat. But how can you figure-out if it will pay you to switch?

A quick rule of thumb

Rather than having to painstakingly try and estimate how much water you use per month or year, there is a quick rule of thumb that can give you an indication of whether you might be better-off to go onto a metered supply. If you have more bedrooms in your accommodation than people, it may pay to switch to a water meter. It could save you up to as much as £100 per annum.

For a more accurate prediction on whether you might save money, you can ask you current water provider, or you can click here for the free water meter calculator on the Water Consumer Council website.

Free water-saving devices

Another of our top tips to reduce your water usage and your water bill is to get some of the free devices that should be available from your current water provider. Things like eco shower heads, tap aerators, and £2 save-a-flush bags. If you already have a water meter installed, these gadgets could save you a further £100 per annum.

Habit changing tips to reduce your water usage and your water bill

In this modern day and age we use approximately 150 litres of water per day per person. This compares to the 20 litres of water per person per day that our grandparents used to use. There is obviously a lot of room for manoeuvre, and simple things like the following can help:

  • Making sure to fix any leaking taps

  • Ensure your toilets have an eco-flush option

  • Don’t run water unless you’re actually using it.

  • If you’re running water waiting for it to warm up, put it into a container and use it for making tea or coffee.

  • Save your washing-up and do it in one go.

  • Don’t run the water when brushing your teeth. Use a glass of water for rinsing your mouth out.

  • Take a shower rather than a bath

  • Turn the shower tap off until you need it to rinse clean

  • Steam vegetables rather than boiling. This is a healthier option too.

  • When you empty the fish tank of water (if of course you have one) use it to water the plants.
